Why Does iGEN Believe Juniors Can Hit a 4-Iron?

At iGen Golf, we believe junior golfers are capable of more than most equipment companies assume.

Many major golf companies automatically replace long irons with hybrids for kids. The reality is, most large OEMs simply haven’t spent much time or engineering money focusing on what junior golfers truly need for long-term development.

IGEN Golf offers 7-irons and 3 wedges in their  full junior sets because those specific clubs fill the most important distance and scoring gaps in a young player’s game. It’s intentional — not random.

Why a 4-Iron Can Be Better Than a Hybrid for Juniors

In golf, especially for juniors, you want the junior to have clubs that:

  • Cover a wide range of yardages

  • Minimize large gaps between clubs

  • Allows them to learn trajectory, distance control, and scoring

  • IGEN’s club progression is designed with that in mind.

Hybrids can sometimes launch too high and produce inconsistent distances for developing players.

A 4‑Iron Is Easier to Hit for Juniors When Properly Built

When a 4‑iron is:

  • lighter

  • shorter

  • matched to the kid’s swing speed

  • built with appropriate flex

…it becomes much easier to launch and use effectively.

Hybrids are often swept or flipped at impact, which can delay proper iron fundamentals.

So IGEN includes it not because adults use it — but because a well‑fit junior can actually hit it well.

Trajectory Management
With a 4-iron, juniors can:

  • Learn to flight the ball

  • Control trajectory in wind

  • Develop shot-shaping skills

Hybrids are designed to launch high and easy — but that doesn’t always build long-term iron control.

Proper Fit Changes Everything

The key isn’t iron vs hybrid.

The key is:

  • Correct length

  • Proper lie angle

  • Appropriate shaft

  • Balanced head weight

When geometry and weight are correct, many juniors can hit a 4-iron with excellent control —

often better than a hybrid.

Our Philosophy

We don’t believe in limiting juniors. We believe in:

  • Engineering for development

  • Fitting for performance

  • Building tools that grow with the athlete

Large companies build for mass markets. We build specifically for developing golfers.

Bottom Line

IGEN includes a 4‑iron  in our Full Set because:

It fills distance gaps AND—when the club is properly fitted—it’s an effective, teachable club for juniors.
Most kids sets skip it because they don’t build clubs for the kid’s swing, so a 4‑iron in a standard set would be too hard to hit.

When clubs are properly engineered and fit, a junior absolutely can learn to control a 4-iron, and benefit from it for years to come.
